trilogy blog lipplumpers

Full, luscious lips are all the rage right now! Everyone wants them, and there are plenty of options to help get the look. Lip injections aren’t the only way to achieve plumper-looking lips. There are lots of lip plumping glosses and treatments on the market, so be sure to keep an eye out for products containing these ingredients:

Mild irritants

Some lip plumping products contain mild irritant ingredients such as capsicum from chili peppers, cinnamon, peppermint and menthol. These ingredients temporarily swell lips by increasing blood flow to the surface for a fuller appearance. The majority of lip plumpers on the market incorporate one or several of these ingredients to effectively irritate the lips. The enhanced blood flow to the lip area, prompted by the irritation, is what makes the lips appear fuller and more voluminous.

Bee Venom

There are some lip glosses out there that create a similar reaction in your lips using bee venom. Yep, that’s right! You read that correctly — bee venom. Some lip plumpers contain this ingredient to trick your skin into thinking it has been stung, creating a swelling effect when applied topically. This stimulates the production of the naturally occurring chemicals collagen and elastin thereby creating a tightening and smoothing effect. We don’t recommend using products that contain bee venom if you have sensitive skin or a history of bee sting allergies.

Peptides and Collagen

Other plumpers are designed to be used to achieve long-term results. They use peptides such as tripeptide-38 or palmitoyl oligopeptide as a way to trigger collagen and elastin production in lips. Other plumpers contain collagen itself in tiny molecules called microspheres that get into the lip and absorb moisture from the body, resulting in plumping. Even other ingredients used in plumpers increase the number and size of adipocytes (fat cells) to stimulate the plumping of lips.

Moisturizers

We all love moist lips. Hyaluronic acid is a moisturizing humectant that is naturally found in skin, connective tissue and nearly everywhere else in the body. Not only can it hold one thousand times its weight in water, but it moisturizes and plumps the skin making it an ideal ingredient for skin care products. When applied topically on your lips, hyaluronic acid gives the appearance of fuller, plumper lips by hydrating the surface. Other moisturizing agents used in plumpers include oils, like jojoba and avocado oil, ceramides and butters, like shea and mango butter.

Now that you know the different ingredients to look for in your lip plumpers, be sure to keep an eye out for Trilogy’s lip plumping products! We are currently working on a nighttime lip treatment, a daily lip moisturizing product with SPF and a lip gloss that has plumping abilities.
